October 10th, 2005 MAGNIFICENT MURALS! (mouse over and click image) Children's Hospital in Seattle unveiled the new Janet Sinegal (wife of Costco CEO) Patient Care Building. (Check out the May 2004 issue of Costco Connections magazine for a short article about us). What does this have to do with us, you ask? Art of Illustration helped two of our artists, Max Grover and Bryn Barnard, get commissions to each create an entire floor of murals for the children and their families to enjoy during their extended stay at the hospital. Max and Bryn had a huge amount of work to do in a short amount of time and both completed the works of art on time. Some of the canvas paintings were 25 ft. x 10 ft and are magnificent. Both artists had to create larger studios to create the work. Children's Hospital is located at 4800 Sand Point Way NE,between University Village and Sand Point Naval Station. |
March 13th, 2005 TED RAND PASSES AT 89! It is with great sadness that we mark the passing of Ted Rand on Saturday March 13th, 2005. Ted was a master at his craft and will be missed by those of us that knew him personally and by all who knew him through the over 80 children's books that he illustrated. Ted had been suffering from the ravages of cancer for the last year and a half and it finally won against a very strong opponent. Check out this wonderful newspaper article on his life and his yearlong fight with numerous cancers. I consider it an honor and a great pleasure to have known Ted and to represent his artwork to the Northwest and the world. Many an art director from around the country, and around the world, would stop in to marvel at how effortless Ted made it look. Ted told me hoped they knew it wasn't effortless. When I opened Art of Illustration, Ted Rand was the first to answer my call for artists. I knew he was a true professional as we scheduled our very first show of children's book artwork. The first day I hung the artwork from Jean Craighead George's Nutik, the Wolf Pup, an out of town visitor walked in and bought 3 of the original paintings. Ted was my best selling artist and I always treasured our interactions. I'll miss you Ted. We still have a number of his signed books available. |
December 27th, 2005 TED RAND TURNS 89! To honor Ted's long career and to help defray medical costs we are offering all of his original artwork at 25% off the original prices. Ted has also offered a special fund raising opportunity to any schools or libraries that purchase his original art to hang. He will allow your group to have publishing rights for making prints of your image, forever. Sell the prints as fund raisers or rewards. Please contact us with requests for your favorite Ted Rand book and we will see if we have any of the original art that Ted painted and sent to the publisher for printing in the books. We have much more than what is shown on the website. |

January 19, 2004 JOIN THE CELEBRATION! |
November 15, 2003 Northwest Bookfest October 18th & 19th, 2003 If you joined us for this exciting weekend of everything literary in the Pacific Northwest, you would have enjoyed authors and illustrators signing their books and giving symposiums. Art of Illustration staged a large and popular show of the original artwork created for the covers of Harlequin Romance novels, Western paperbacks, and Sci-Fi novels. We had a great weekend of signings by Ted and Gloria Rand, Alexandra Day and "Carl", Richard Jesse Watson, Gudrun Ongman, Mike Cressy, Bryn Barnard, and Todd Lockwood. "Carl" (whose real name is Zubiaga) was in great spirits and "Whinny the Pony" had a case of the runs on stage that cut the signing a little short. Like WC Fields said, "Never work with children or animals". So what do we do....we work with both and enjoyed almost every minute of it. Attendance was about half of what it has been in years past but we still enjoyed ourselves enough to do this again next year so mark your calendars. |
