Schedule a school visit and inspire the students in your care.

How do I find an illustrator or writer to come to our school or birthday party and talk to the children?
Most of the schools are adding illustrators to the list of speakers to come and speak to the students because they realize how much more engaged the kids become when drawing is involved. The children are still at the age that they all draw and it is important to continue to inspire them. With cuts in the arts budgets it becomes even more important to economize on the experience and work the concept into a unit where more than one subject is taught at the same time. Most of our artists are also writers at some level, but in addition, the books they have created are a subject also. Some are science, some are math, some are environmental, some are multicultural, some are dance, and some are musical in addition to art and reading. There are many of the books that have lesson plans to use. Many of these people are also educators and it is important to engage and inspire the children as well as teach them. The kids just love listening and watching and meeting these well-known published authors and illustrators. This is an assembly they will always remember. Contact us at (206) 254-9100 or email Scott to set up a visit. We have also made our artists available to show up to sign books at children's Birthday parties. Much better than a clown, and you can give a book back to the guests as a keepsake of this most favorite day. Your child will always be the top birthday draw after this.

Presentation:

Utilizing slide shows and demonstrations, Gudrun brings the stages of picture book writing and illustration alive for her young audiences. From the origin of story ideas, through storyboarding, illustration and publishing, the processes are demystified and made attainable. This assembly works on its own or is an excellent introduction to classroom projects.

*For preschool and young primary school children, a reading and slide show of The Sleep Ponies is also available.

Classroom Projects

Using this visual and concrete method, children see instantly the power of character and detail.

Art programs - Drawing is not a mystical talent, it can be easily learned. Drawing on the right side of the brain, learning to truly see, learning some basic tricks or approaches, all kids can learn to feel satisfaction in drawing realistically, a precursor to confidence in all aspects of fine arts.

Story Related Art Projects include -

* Develop your own character. * Guided lesson in drawing a favorite character   * Develop a dummy page for an existing story.*. Draw yourself into a favorite story.

Professional Affiliations:
Member of The Society of Children's Books Writers and Illustrators International and Washington/Northern Idaho Region.

SPEAKING INFORMATION:
Topic: Children’s Book Illustration
Audience: I would prefer to speak to either children in grades 3 or 4 as that is the age of the readers of my books, but I am also open to any age when it comes to talking about illustrating books. I teach a class on children's book illustration to adults.
Programs:
My programs vary and can be tailored to a specific audience and subject matter. For young kids (the target age of my books) I like to visit school classrooms and libraries share my books, read from them and give them some history lessons about the people in the books. For Junior High age kids, sharing my books and then giving them an assignment to come up with an illustration from the text I provide is ideal.
For High School students and adults, I structure the program like I do the children's book illustration class I teach at Bellevue Community College. For that class I talk about my experiences as an illustrator, show samples of my work and others illustrators and talk about different media available to an artist like oil paint, watercolor etc., and give brief demos on these different techniques.
Length: It can vary from as short as a half-hour to a full day.

In his behind-the-scenes look at picture books, Mr. Watson discusses the interplay of text and illustrations, infusing language with imagery, and pictures with stories. following activities:
… Drawing and cartoon demonstrations
… Illustrating a portion of text
… Exploring the imagination

… Drawing or painting techniques
… Mural Project

stories in their own lives.

He will also provide a bookmark design which may be photocopied by school staff and passed out to all the students. This ensures that everyone receives something with Richard's signature on it and that no one feels left out if some are unable to purchase a book. He will donate one of his books to the school library with a special inscription to the students.
