Alexandra Day is the pseudonym for Sandra Louise Woodward Darling. She was born in 1941 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to a large close-knit family. Painting was a popular family recreation and her parents made sure her home was always well supplied with easels, sketchpads, chalks, paints, and pencils.

Sandra lived in New York for a time after completing an English degree at Swarthmore College. She established Green Tiger Press with her husband Harold in San Diego in 1970 and illustrated her first book, The Teddy Bear's Picnic in 1983 followed by Good Dog, Carl in 1984. They sold Green Tiger Press in 1986 and have just recently purchased it back. In 1993 the family moved to Seattle where they continue to reside along with their 10,000 book library. The fifth and latest "Carl" is named Zuleica.
