Bryn created for Children's Hospital in Seattle Bryn Barnard was raised in the San Joaquin Hills of Southern California. He traveled with a shadow puppet theater company in Malyasia and worked in Java before studying art at University of California, Berkeley and illustration at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Starting in 1981, Bryn was commissioned to paint for National Geographic, NASA, and Time-Life Books as well as most of the New York paperback publishers. By 1990 Bryn had started painting books for children and has completed over 10. In 1999 Bryn was asked to design a sea turtle costume to march in the WTO and World Bank protests. The police say they liked the turtles so much they didn't beat any of them. They also were the photos used on all major magazines reporting on the protests. One of the costumes is in the Smithsonian. Bryn has won awards for many of his illustrations including honors from Society of Illustrators and the Japan Creators Association. His work has appeared in five of the annual Spectrum fantasy books. In 1999 he was awarded a Fulbright fellowship to Malaysia. Bryn also serves as visiting lecturer at many colleges and universities across the country. 2003 also brought a commision for an entire floor of murals for the
new wing of Childrens Hospital in Seattle. The largest of four canvas
paintings is 10 feet x 25 feet and represents the animals of the Savanah.
Bryn lives on San Juan Island in Washington with his wife and two children. |
